Hurricane Beryl Quickly Becomes Category 1

World News

Hurricane Beryl strengthened during the early hours of this Friday and became a hurricane with winds of 75 miles per hour , reported the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in its newsletter at 5:00 am

It is classified as a category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale .

However, the cyclone is expected to weaken once it enters the arc of the Lesser Antilles between Sunday and Monday at dawn.

Therefore, “it would affect Puerto Rico as a strong tropical wave “, says meteorologist Odalys Martinez, of the National Meteorological Service in San Juan.

High Humidity Expected From Hurricane Beryl

“All that humidity associated with the wave will reach the area by Monday,” said the expert, indicating that the entire eastern Caribbean would be affected by the rain associated with this system.

He reported that Hurricane Beryl is forecast to leave between one to four inches of rain on the island between Monday and Tuesday of next week .

“On Monday and early Tuesday morning it looks damp, it is not until Tuesday afternoon until Wednesday that the air mass dries up,” Martinez said.

The maritime conditions, meanwhile, would begin to be affected from this Sunday.

At 5:00 am, Beryl was 1,140 nautical miles southeast of the Lesser Antilles, specifically at latitude 10.6 degrees north and longitude 45.1 degrees west.

It was moving west at 14 miles per hour and had a pressure of 995 millibars.

So far, there is no hurricane watch or warning for any territory .

Speed  is Factor Now

NHC explained that Beryl is expected to show more signs of strengthening during the day.

However, the weather agency’s report indicates that “Beryl is forecast to weaken rapidly on Saturday night and turn into a tropical storm or degenerate as a strong tropical wave near the Lesser Antilles late Sunday through Monday.”

A hurricane-hunting plane is expected to travel to the system tomorrow to analyze the cyclone.

Beryl is the first hurricane to form in the Atlantic Ocean in this hurricane season .

The first cyclonic system of the year was Alberto, who became a subtropical storm.

It affected Cuba, as well as the states of Florida, Alabama and Georgia last May, prior to the start of the hurricane season.
